Right-footed forward, skillful and quick in the area, with a big scoring threat — but unselfish with it, always looking to find a better-placed teammate, a near-specialist in the assist-pass. Strong in the air, and puts in real defensive work harrying opposing defenders' build-up rather than just waiting on chances as an out-and-out poacher.
Came to the game late — didn't start playing organized football until 22, when he was spotted in neighborhood tournaments and signed by Belgrano de La Pampa, then All Boys de La Pampa, where his coach converted him from a right-sided midfielder into a forward. Made his name in Uruguayan football: a brief, unproductive Peñarol spell, then Wanderers, then Danubio, where he built a reputation for scoring against Peñarol — a trend that continued once he crossed to Argentina. Nearly joined Independiente before San Lorenzo signed him instead. Debuted in the Argentine Primera División on 14 March 1993 against Talleres de Córdoba, scoring on his debut. Was the club's top scorer in the Clausura '95 title-winning campaign and again the following tournament, before a spell at Bordeaux in France in 1996. Called into the Argentina squad by Alfio Basile ahead of the 1994 World Cup without debuting; finally capped by Daniel Passarella on 21 December 1995, a 6-0 win over Venezuela in Mendoza. Later called up again for World Cup qualifiers requiring altitude preparation in La Quiaca ahead of a match in La Paz, but was left out of the final squad. Returned to San Lorenzo and, per the source, formed an effective strike partnership with Abreu in the closing stretch of Clausura '97, finishing as the club's top scorer with 8 goals in 16 appearances.
