Veteran right-sided central defender, a reserve now but a useful squad option; his last several seasons were badly disrupted by a right-knee injury that kept him out for over a year. Well-positioned, good in the air, with a powerful right-footed strike.
Two league titles ('85/86 with River, Clausura '95 with San Lorenzo), a Copa Libertadores with River ('86), a Copa América (Ecuador '93). Argentina U-20 international under Carlos Pachamé in 1983, finishing runner-up to Brazil at the South American championship in Bolivia and again at the U-20 World Cup in Mexico. Called up repeatedly to the senior national team by Alfio Basile: part of the Copa América '93-winning squad, played in World Cup '94 qualifying including the 5-0 loss to Colombia at the Monumental, and was in Argentina's 1994 World Cup squad, though Fernando Cáceres kept him out of the starting XI. Began at River Plate but had to go on loan to Platense to make his Primera División debut, on 30 September 1981; returned to River to win the '85/86 title alongside Óscar Ruggeri. Injuries then set in; returned for the '86 Copa Libertadores run but was hurt again late in that campaign. Spent time at Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in Mexico before returning to Argentine football with Racing in Apertura '91, staying four seasons as one of the squad's senior figures. Moved to San Lorenzo in Clausura '95 — the title-winning campaign — but played only twice before injuries again sidelined him. Returned from a serious knee injury to start for San Lorenzo in Clausura '97, but performed poorly and was dropped in favor of Luis Fernando; at season's end Castelli told him he was not part of the following tournament's plans. Stayed on to train with the squad hoping for one more chance. Played 7 matches, no goals, in Clausura '97.
