⚕ SEASON-DEFINING INJURY — READ FIRST
On 21 September 2025, van Bommel suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear during a 2-2 draw with Ajax, ruling him out for the remainder of the 2025-26 season. Everything statistical on this card is drawn from a tiny, pre-injury sample — roughly 3-4 Eredivisie appearances and 269-381 minutes depending on source. Treat every rate stat here as a small-sample flash, not a settled season profile. Update: Jim has since supplied the actual match file for that Ajax game (Matches tab) — this is the footage of the injury itself, not just a pre-injury data point.

A genuinely hot start, cut short. He scored on debut against Groningen (23 Aug 2025) and carried a 7.62 average rating into the Ajax match where his season effectively ended. That's a real, promising signal — but it's 3-4 matches, not a body of work.

Only 1 of 3 standard PSV files is usable (Groningen, pre-injury). Telstar and Sparta Rotterdam post-date his ACL tear and could not have involved him.
Preliminary Data Verdict
A 21-year-old Dutch left winger, son of PSV legend Mark van Bommel, who scored on his PSV debut before a season-ending ACL injury cut his first campaign to roughly 3-4 matches.

⚠️ Read before citing this number
Empire's real FGA is 20% Tier 1 / 30% Tier 2 / 50% Tier 3. With Tier 2/3 both empty and Tier 1 itself limited to ~4 matches, this 6.4 is a deliberately conservative substitute — the per-match numbers (7.62 rating, a goal on debut) are genuinely strong, but the sample is too small and the injury too serious to score this any higher in good conscience.

Paste timestamped match observations from the Groningen file and I'll structure them into evidence logs. Note: only 1 of the 3 usable match files exists for him pre-injury — Tier 3 review here will always be a limited sample until he returns from the ACL tear.

Everything about the early PSV form (hot rating, goal on debut) points to a promising fit — but a serious injury this early in a first top-club season is exactly the kind of variable that can reshape a whole trajectory. Worth revisiting from scratch on his return.

Data-Driven Scouting Report — Preliminary
Public sources only · Tier 3 not conducted
Ruben van Bommel is a 21-year-old Dutch left winger for PSV Eindhoven, born 3 August 2004 in Meerssen — the son of PSV and Netherlands legend Mark van Bommel, and grandson of former Netherlands manager Bert van Marwijk through his mother's side. He came through PSV's own academy before leaving for MVV Maastricht, where a 15-goal breakout season triggered a move to AZ Alkmaar, and eventually a return to PSV on an 11 July 2025 five-year deal.
His start was genuinely excellent. He scored on his PSV debut against Groningen and carried a 7.62 average rating into his fourth appearance. Then, on 21 September 2025, he suffered an ACL tear against Ajax that ended his season. This is the single most important fact about his 2025-26 campaign — every stat on this card comes from roughly 3-4 matches, not a season.
On the two supplied "U19" match files: research indicates these belong to the 2025 UEFA European Under-19 Championship (Netherlands beat Germany 3-0 in the group stage, lost the final to Spain on 26 June 2025) — a tournament for a younger Dutch generation. Van Bommel had already progressed to U20 level by March 2023 and U21 by September 2023, more than two years before that tournament. These files do not appear to involve him at all and have been excluded from the Matches tab rather than presented as his footage.
Empire FGA Status Note
Tier 1 data-thin (injury) · Tier 2/3 not scored · No final FGA composite. The father-son Champions League scorer storyline is real and notable, but it belongs to a different competition and season — don't let it inflate the assessment of this specific PSV campaign.
